Jann Derrick Biography

     Jann is a Registered Family Therapist, a Member of the Canadian Psychological Association, a highly skilled and experienced group facilitator and an author. She is both a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

     Jann is the mother of three children and the grandmother of six. Jann is of Mohawk heritage.

     She has been in practice for 30 years in Vancouver, Lytton, Vernon and Kamloops.

     Jann provided groundbreaking work in community with residential school survivors in the early 1980’s.

      Jann has delivered workshops and trainings in all parts of Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia on topics pertaining to relationships, Native trauma, survivorship and wellness, and two meta systems ~ The Box and The Circle.

      Jann has knowledge and experience working with traditional First Nations healing methods as well as extensive knowledge of trauma, specifically Historical Trauma and its treatment.

     Jann has worked at Round Lake Treatment Centre as a clinical supervisor, a trainer of Drug and Alcohol counsellors, and as therapist in the Trauma Recovery Program. She facilitated a national Aboriginal Focus Group that created a Code of Ethics for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. She has published professionally regarding The Box and The Circle and Native Family Systems, as well as contributing to many publications including The Dispossessed by Geoffrey York and “When Turtle Met Rabbit: Native Family Systems” in Voices of Color, 2004.

     In October of 2003 Jann was the recipient of the John Banmen Award for outstanding service and contribution to the Family Therapy Profession in BC.
